Voltaire never wrote ‘defend to the death’: the 1906 London book where the famous line began
The sentence first appears on page 199 of The Friends of Voltaire by Evelyn Beatrice Hall, who wrote in 1939 that it was her own phrase and should never have been in quotation marks.
