"articleBody": "Leroy Jethro Gibbs walks into the NCIS director’s office on Tuesday, October 20, and the man behind the desk is Tony DiNozzo. CBS has set the first on-screen reunion of Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly in a decade for “Return of the Mack”, the third episode of NCIS: Origins season 3, at 10 p.m. Eastern. The same hour brings back a third founding character, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, played in the show’s 1992 storyline by Adam Campbell. The network’s own episode summary is short. In 1992, Ducky helps the Camp Pendleton team after a young Marine turns up dead on a beach with strange markings across his body; in the present, Gibbs “reunites with a familiar face from the past.” A preview that ran after episode 2 on October 13 removed any doubt about whose face that is. “I gave it to 10 to 1 odds you’d even show,” Tony says from behind his desk. “I knew you’d show,” Gibbs replies, and the clip ends on a hug. How Gibbs, Tony and Ducky got here All three left the main show by different exits, which is why CBS is selling this as a franchise event rather than a guest spot: 2016: Tony leaves at the end of season 13 after learning he has a daughter, Tali, with Ziva David. Weatherly had played him in more than 300 episodes. 2021: Gibbs quits NCIS in the episode “Great Wide Open”, having found peace in Alaska. September 25, 2023: David McCallum, who had played Ducky since 2003, dies at 90 after 20 seasons in the role. 2024: Weatherly makes a cameo in the season 21 farewell to Ducky, “The Stories We Leave Behind”; Gibbs does not appear. On October 14, Origins premieres with Harmon narrating as the older Gibbs. 2025: Weatherly and Cote de Pablo lead the streaming spinoff NCIS: Tony & Ziva on Paramount+. June 30 and July 1, 2026: Harmon is announced for all 10 episodes of Origins season 3, and CBS confirms Weatherly for a season-long arc on the flagship. October 6, 2026: In the NCIS season 24 premiere, “Wayward Son”, Tony is appointed Director of NCIS. The same night, Origins shows present-day Gibbs being shot in Alaska by a masked attacker. October 20, 2026: Gibbs and Tony share a scene again, 10 years after Weatherly’s exit and five years after Harmon’s. Why Gibbs needs the director The setup is mechanical, in the good sense. Gibbs survived the Alaska ambush by slowing his breathing until the shooters took him for dead, and he heard one of them say there was still one target to go. He lifted a fingerprint from his own neck and took it to Woody, the forensic analyst played by Bobby Moynihan, now 83 in the present-day timeline. Woody could run the print but could not open the locked file it led to, so Gibbs went to the one old colleague with that level of access. Episode 2 ended with him walking past the team’s desks toward Tony’s door. Ducky’s return works the other way, in the past. Campbell first played the young medical examiner in flashbacks on NCIS and appeared again in the flagship’s 500th episode; “Return of the Mack” is his third Origins outing. Showrunner David J. North said in an interview that this season’s episode with Campbell and Austin Stowell’s young Gibbs shows how the two men first learned to work together, the start of the friendship Harmon and McCallum played for two decades. One character stays off screen. Ziva will be mentioned this season but there are no plans for de Pablo to return, NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder said in an interview, because she shares a child with the director: “So even if we don’t necessarily see her, we will hear about her and we’ll feel her, for sure.” The Tuesday lineup CBS is running three franchise shows back to back on Tuesdays: NCIS at 8 p.m., the new NCIS: New York, led by LL Cool J’s returning Sam Hanna, at 9 p.m., and NCIS: Origins at 10 p.m. Eastern, with episodes streaming on Paramount+. Origins has a reduced 10-episode order this year, so after the October 20 reunion the present-day Gibbs mystery has seven episodes left to play out.
