"articleBody": "The first trailer for Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs arrived on October 9, and it has set off a wave of questions about how the new film fits into one of horror’s most famous franchises. Here is what we know. Is it a remake of the 1973 film? No. Flanagan has said the film is neither a remake of William Friedkin’s original nor a continuation of David Gordon Green’s 2023 film The Exorcist: Believer. “We wanted very much for this to stand on its own two legs, encapsulating a brand-new plotline with brand-new characters,” he said. What is it about? Scarlett Johansson plays Julie Miller, a New York detective who, 13 years earlier, ended the killing spree of a satanic murderer known as Father Sunday. When a new killer writes her name in blood on a church crypt wall, she is pulled back into the case. She and her allies uncover a link between a line of serial killers stretching from H.H. Holmes to the Zodiac. Who else is in the cast? Chiwetel Ejiofor as Father William, a former prison chaplain who heard Father Sunday’s final confession John Leguizamo as Father Sunday Sasha Calle as rookie detective Gina Restrepo Laurence Fishburne as a priest brought in for his knowledge of ancient rituals Diane Lane as Julie’s mother, Mary, and Jacobi Jupe as her 12-year-old son, Max Flanagan regulars including Rahul Kohli, Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel and Samantha Sloyan also appear. What inspired it? Flanagan has cited The Exorcist III as an influence, along with Se7en, The Silence of the Lambs and the original Exorcist. He has said he wants to tell audiences they are “not seeing a retread” of the 1973 film, while joking that it still “does have that one job from the title.” When is it out? Universal Pictures will release the film in cinemas on March 12, 2027.
