Darren Sammy alleges racism during IPL Former West Indies player and also former captain of the T20 World Cup winning team has alleges that during Indian Premier League (IPL) his Sunrisers Hyderabad teammates call him “ Kallu” a racist slur and he was not aware about its meaning.
An Instagram video posted by Sammy “ Knowledge is power. I recently discovered a word that I was being called and was not aware what I meant. So before I start calling out names and I need these individuals to reach out to me and tell me there is some other meaning of this word and it was all in love”.
He went to say that he heared the same word during Hasan Minaj’s patriotic Act episode- where he called out South Asian communities for racism and obsession for fair skin colour and which made him realise that “Kalu” is a racist slur and used to describe black people and it’s derogatory.
This video comes at a time when world is gripped with #Blacklivesmatter movement and protests are escalated over death of an unarmed African American George Flyod.
At the end of video he added “ I will be messaging you guys and you know who you are. Let’s have a conversation. I will be waiting to hear from you guys.”
