"articleBody": "Boyz II Men have signed with Warner Records Nashville and are making a country album for release in 2027, the Philadelphia trio announced on Monday, October 26. It will be their first full-length record of new material since Under the Streetlight, the doo-wop covers set they put out in October 2017. Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris and Shawn Stockman have already cut songs in Nashville with several of the city’s award-winning writers. No title, single or release month has been announced yet. The group has framed the move as joining the genre’s community of singers and songwriters, not as abandoning the R&B harmonies that made them famous. In an interview published this week, Shawn Stockman pointed to country songwriting’s focus on storytelling as the draw, and said that at this stage of their career the timing felt right to try it. Why a Nashville label wanted an R&B group The label’s chair and president, Cris Lacy, pointed to the group’s reach in her statement on the signing. “Every genre and culture has benefited from their original music,” she said, adding that their influence on today’s country artists is “perhaps surprising to some” but “quite profound.” She said she decided to sign them after learning that hearing Randy Travis as young listeners had shaped their wish to work with Nashville writers. The numbers behind that pitch are large. Worldwide album sales top 60 million across the 35 years since Cooleyhighharmony came out in 1991, and the group holds four Grammy Awards. Their 1994 album II passed 12 million copies in the US alone, and three of their singles each set a new record for weeks at No. 1 on the US singles chart: “End of the Road” with 13 weeks in 1992, “I’ll Make Love to You” with 14 in 1994, and “One Sweet Day,” their 1995 duet with Mariah Carey. Eight years of steps toward country The announcement looks less sudden when the group’s recent dates are lined up. Each step put them on a country stage or next to a country act: 2018: a Grand Ole Opry performance dedicated to the late Ray Charles. 2019: an episode of the music series CMT Crossroads with country singer Brett Young. 2025: appearances with Cody Johnson at the Stagecoach festival in California, and a cover of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” at Nashville’s Freedom Sing! Fourth of July celebration. September 2026: “I Love The One,” a collaboration with the country trio Lady A, released as their first real look at the new direction. It will appear on a coming music project inspired by The Chosen, the drama series about the life of Jesus. The gap is easy to measure. If the album lands in 2027, it will arrive about 36 years after Cooleyhighharmony and roughly a decade after Under the Streetlight, which peaked at No. 58 on the US current album sales chart. In the years between, the group stayed busy without new albums: a Las Vegas residency at The Mirage that ran until 2018, a 2024 win on The Masked Singer as the Buffalos, the first group ever to take the title, and specially recorded opening and closing music for The Simpsons this year. For the trio, country is one of the few styles it has never fully explored. Stockman noted that the group has worked in almost every other genre and called country one it had long wanted to dig into. Their most recent hometown appearance came days before the announcement. On Thursday, October 22, the three sang the US national anthem at the Philadelphia 76ers’ home opener, a game that was also the first home appearance in a Sixers uniform for LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.
